Ryan Serhant’s Secret to Owning Manhattan
Back in April we interviewed Ryan Serhant, the real estate powerhouse and entrepreneur, to dig into the strategies that have fueled his success. What stood out the most? Persistence—simple, relentless, and incredibly effective.
Ryan’s story is one of adaptation.
When he first landed in New York in 2006, his dreams were all about theater, not real estate. But when the 2008 financial crisis hit, he had to pivot. He got his real estate license and soon discovered that the skills he had picked up in theater—like thinking on his feet and connecting with people—worked wonders in sales too. Despite the tough market, he didn’t back down. Instead, he leaned into persistence, which became his secret weapon.
A key takeaway from our chat was Ryan’s belief in the power of follow-up.
For him, sales isn’t just about making a deal; it’s about building relationships and staying on people’s radars.
His approach?
Follow up until they buy or die
But it’s not just about being persistent; it’s about being purposeful. Ryan never sent out generic messages. Every follow-up had something valuable—whether it was a new listing, market insight, or just a thoughtful touchpoint. He wanted to be more than just a salesperson; he aimed to be the go-to resource his clients could rely on.
This strategy paid off in big ways.
Ryan shared a story about a client he stayed in touch with for five years. Even after the client went silent, Serhant kept reaching out with useful updates, never asking for anything in return. Years later, that client’s husband was ready to buy, and they closed a $16 million deal—proof that persistence and providing real value can lead to big rewards.
In our conversation, he made it clear that while the tools of the trade might change, the basics of sales don’t. It’s still all about trust, value, and being there when your clients need you. Whether you’re dealing with new regulations, embracing AI, or navigating market shifts, Ryan’s success shows that sticking to these fundamentals is what really drives results.
Ryan’s story is a powerful reminder: staying persistent, offering value, and being consistent can turn even the toughest challenges into opportunities.
